No Rain is an original jazz composition by saxophonist and composer Matt Zebley. The tune is structured as a 24-bar form, a compact framework that falls between the common 16-bar and 32-bar lengths found in much of the jazz repertoire. This moderate form length gives the composition enough harmonic territory for melodic development while maintaining a concise, uncluttered architecture that keeps the music moving forward without unnecessary repetition. The piece appeared on Zebley's 1998 album Live at Moondog, where it was performed with his working group of the period. In that recording, Zebley takes the sole improvised solo on alto saxophone, making the track a focused showcase for his playing within the context of his own writing. Zebley is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and the University of Southern California who earned a Grammy Award in 2001 as a member of the Brian Setzer Orchestra. His performing credits include work alongside Bob Dylan, Wayne Shorter, and Alicia Keys, and he has built a parallel career as a jazz educator, serving as Director of Jazz Studies at Diablo Valley College. His compositions span a range of styles from hard swing to lyrical ballads to free improvisation. No Rain is representative of his original writing for small ensemble and remains closely tied to his own recorded output, without having entered broader circulation as a widely performed jazz tune.
