"Captain Marvel" is a jazz fusion composition by Chick Corea, first recorded in March 1972 during sessions led by Stan Getz for Columbia Records, though the resulting album was not released until 1975. The piece features soaring, expansive melodic lines over layered harmonic progressions that blend Latin jazz rhythmic drive with fusion-era electric keyboard textures. Corea wrote it during his transition away from the avant-garde explorations of Circle and Miles Davis's electric bands toward a more accessible, melodically grounded approach. The original session assembled a group that would become the nucleus of Return to Forever: Stanley Clarke on bass and Airto Moreira on percussion, joined by Tony Williams on drums. Corea subsequently re-recorded the tune with Return to Forever for the 1973 album Light as a Feather, featuring Joe Farrell on flute and Flora Purim on vocals, giving the composition a more Brazilian-inflected character. The harmony reveals structured key centers beneath surfaces that can initially seem non-functional, and the form supports extended improvisation with sections that accommodate flamenco-like intensity alongside bebop and rock-influenced phrasing. The tune has been arranged for big band by Mike Tomaro through Hal Leonard and studied in academic harmonic analyses. It occupies a central place in the early fusion repertoire, representing Corea's synthesis of Latin, jazz, and rock elements during a pivotal creative period.
