You Don't Know What Love Is is a melancholic ballad composed by Gene de Paul with lyrics by Don Raye in 1941. The song was originally written for the Abbott and Costello comedy film Keep 'Em Flying, where it was to be performed by actress Carol Bruce, but it was deleted from that film before release and instead appeared in the 1942 film Behind the Eight Ball, again featuring Bruce. The striking incongruity of a deeply serious, emotionally complex ballad created for lightweight slapstick comedies foreshadowed its eventual migration away from popular entertainment and into the jazz canon. Raye and de Paul were a prolific team during this period, and notably both this tune and the enduring standard I'll Remember April were written by the same pair for Abbott and Costello pictures in 1941. Though the song was recorded by several big band vocalists in the 1940s, including Dick Haymes with Harry James and Billy Eckstine with Earl Hines, it did not achieve major commercial success in its original context. Its transformation into a jazz standard came in the 1950s, driven by landmark instrumental recordings. Miles Davis recorded it in 1954 on his Walkin' session, and Sonny Rollins delivered a celebrated version on Saxophone Colossus in 1956. Vocal interpretations by Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, and Anita O'Day further cemented its standing. Louis Armstrong's 1942 broadcast from Casa Manana in Culver City represents one of the earliest jazz treatments. The tune has since become one of the most revisited ballads in the jazz repertoire, its somber character proving endlessly rich for improvisation.
