Beauteous is an original composition by bassist Paul Chambers, written for his second Blue Note album as a leader, the Paul Chambers Quintet, recorded on May 19, 1957. The title aptly describes the character of the piece, which is one of the more lyrical and melodically attractive compositions to emerge from Chambers' small body of original work. As a composer, Chambers is far less well known than he is as one of the most important bassists in jazz history, but Beauteous demonstrates a genuine melodic gift and a sensitive ear for harmony. The composition shares a certain aesthetic affinity with The Hand of Love, another Chambers original from the same session, both pieces favoring warmth and melodic flow over the angular, blues-drenched themes that dominated much hard bop writing of the period. The tune provides an effective framework for improvisation, giving each soloist room to develop ideas within its harmonic structure. The original recording features Donald Byrd on trumpet, Clifford Jordan on tenor saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, and Chambers on bass, a group whose collective musicianship brought out the best in Chambers' writing. While Beauteous has remained a deep cut rather than entering the broader jazz repertoire, it stands as evidence that Chambers possessed compositional abilities that deserved wider recognition alongside his universally acknowledged mastery of the bass.
