"Ideal" is an original composition by Canadian jazz vocalist and songwriter Caity Gyorgy, featured on her album Featuring, released in 2022 on La Reserve Records. The album is built around a distinctive concept in which each track spotlights a different guest soloist performing alongside Gyorgy's core quartet, and on this tune the featured guest is clarinetist Virginia MacDonald. Gyorgy composed eleven of the album's thirteen tracks, writing in a style that draws heavily on the tradition of the Great American Songbook while filtering it through a modern sensibility. Her lyrics frequently explore themes of romance, admiration, and interpersonal connection, and "Ideal" fits comfortably within that lyrical world. The composition showcases Gyorgy's ability to craft melodies and harmonic progressions that feel rooted in the classic jazz vocal tradition yet remain distinctly personal. MacDonald's clarinet work adds a warm, woody timbral contrast to Gyorgy's voice, giving the track a chamber-jazz quality that distinguishes it from the album's other arrangements. The Featuring album was nominated for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year at the 2023 JUNO Awards, following Gyorgy's win in the same category the previous year for Now Pronouncing. Gyorgy has described the project as a dream collaboration, and "Ideal" exemplifies the intimate, composition-centered approach that defines the record.
