Paradise City is a hard rock anthem written collaboratively by all five members of Guns N' Roses during rehearsals in mid-1985, ahead of their early club dates and the infamous Hell Tour. The song originated when Slash improvised a melody on acoustic guitar in a rental van after a San Francisco show, with vocalist Axl Rose contributing the iconic chorus refrain and other members shaping the structure. Duff McKagan crafted the first part of the chorus, Izzy Stradlin the second, and Slash developed the melody for its latter half along with the driving main riff. The lyrics juxtapose gritty verses depicting urban struggle in Los Angeles against an anthemic, yearning chorus evoking escape to green grass and innocence, likely drawing from Rose and Stradlin's childhood memories of Lafayette, Indiana. A distinctive feature of the composition is its dramatic tempo shift to double-time in the final section, where the chorus repeats over an extended guitar solo, stretching the track to nearly seven minutes and making it the longest piece on its parent album. The song also features the only synthesizer on the record, adding textural contrast to its otherwise raw guitar-driven sound. Hanoi Rocks guitarist Andy McCoy has noted similarities between the chorus riff and elements of that band's work, though Guns N' Roses describe the piece as entirely their own collaborative creation.
