Shiki no Uta, translated as Song of Four Seasons, is a melancholic hip-hop ballad composed by Jun Seba, the visionary Japanese producer known as Nujabes, in collaboration with singer-songwriter Michiko Kuwano, who performs under the name Minmi. Created in 2004 as the ending theme for most episodes of the anime series Samurai Champloo, the piece emerged from a genuinely collaborative process: Minmi initially proposed singing over an existing Nujabes instrumental, but he insisted on building something new together, with her contributing melody, lyrics, and narrative concept while he crafted the production. The composition is built on a gentle, looping melodic structure over a concise progression of repeating seventh chords with jazz-influenced voicings, inversions, and extended harmonies, giving it a sophisticated warmth beneath its deceptively simple surface. The overall effect evokes a deep sense of sorrow and longing, perfectly suited to the anime's reflections on violence, loss, and memory. Within Nujabes' body of work, the tune exemplifies his meticulous approach to sampling and jazz-hip-hop fusion, drawn from years of digging through Tokyo record shops. While not a traditional jazz standard, it has become iconic within the overlapping worlds of anime, J-hip-hop, and international lo-fi music, bridging those audiences through its timeless emotional resonance. Jun Iida's interpretation on his 2023 album Evergreen reimagines the piece in an instrumental jazz context, featuring his trumpet over the composition's evocative harmonic framework.
