Page One is tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's debut as a leader, recorded on June 3, 1963 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and released on Blue Note Records. Trumpeter Kenny Dorham, who had championed Henderson and helped him secure his Blue Note contract, shares the front line, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Pete La Roca on drums. Henderson was twenty-six and arrived fully formed, writing four of the album's six compositions and soloing with an intensity and harmonic sophistication that set him apart from his contemporaries. The album's two most enduring pieces come from Dorham: "Blue Bossa," whose bossa nova-inflected melody became one of the most widely played tunes in jazz, and "La Mesha," a lyrical ballad. Henderson's own "Recorda-Me" similarly entered the standard repertoire and remains closely identified with his legacy. AllMusic awarded the album five stars, and it is consistently regarded as one of the strongest debut recordings in jazz history. Tyner's name was omitted from the original cover due to contractual obligations with Impulse! Records, though his harmonic support is a defining element of the session's sound.
