Sweet Stuff - Daniel Rotem & Josh Johnson Quartet

Sweet Stuff is a pianoless quartet date co-led by tenor saxophonist Daniel Rotem and alto saxophonist Josh Johnson, with bassist Alex Boneham and drummer Christian Euman. Released on Fresh Sound Records, the album features seven tracks drawn entirely from the jazz standard repertoire, with compositions by Thelonious Monk, Benny Golson, Billy Strayhorn, Joe Henderson, Ornette Coleman, and Arthur Altman. The absence of a chordal instrument places the two saxophonists in close dialogue, trading melodic lines and building collective momentum over Boneham and Euman's rhythmic foundation. The program ranges from uptempo swing on Monk's "We See" and Coleman's "When Will the Blues Leave" to the slow-burn ballad treatment of Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge," with Golson's "Along Came Betty" and Henderson's "Serenity" filling out the middle ground. Jazz Journal praised the quartet's "mature yet questing breadth and depth" in their approach to both repertoire and group interplay.
