Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is the second of four albums drawn from marathon sessions at Rudy Van Gelder's studio on May 11 and October 26, 1956, released on Prestige Records in 1961. The quintet — John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums — recorded without retakes, playing through material from their regular club sets. The program moves between ballads and swingers, with Davis's reading of the Ray Noble standard "The Way You Look Tonight" opening with his muted trumpet at a medium tempo before Coltrane enters with a contrasting solo. "Salt Peanuts" nods to the quintet's bebop roots with Dizzy Gillespie's composition taken at a brisk clip. "When I Fall in Love" is among the more lyrical performances across all four albums, with Davis's muted horn carrying the melody with understated emotion. By the time of its release, Davis had moved well beyond this material — his Columbia albums were exploring modal jazz and larger ensembles — but the Prestige sessions document a working band at its most relaxed and communicative. The four albums together remain essential listening for anyone studying the mechanics of small-group jazz interplay.
