Public Eye is trumpeter Roy Hargrove's second album, released on Novus Records in 1991 when he was just twenty years old. The quintet features Antonio Hart on alto saxophone, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums — a mix of Hargrove's young contemporaries and the veteran Higgins, who had been a first-call drummer since the late 1950s. The program balances standards with originals across eleven tracks, including "September in the Rain," "What's New," "You Don't Know What Love Is," and "Once in Awhile" alongside Hargrove's own compositions like the title track, "Hartbreaker," and "Night Watch." Charlie Parker's "Crazeology" ties the set to the bebop lineage that Hargrove openly embraced. Hargrove had been discovered as a high school student in Dallas by Wynton Marsalis and was part of the wave of young acoustic jazz musicians signed to major labels in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His warm tone, melodic directness, and rhythmic confidence are already evident here, as is his instinct for assembling strong bands — McBride and Hart would both go on to prominent careers as leaders. The album captures a moment when hard bop was being revived by a new generation of players committed to the tradition while developing their own voices within it.
