The River is Bruce Springsteen's fifth studio album, released as a double LP on October 17, 1980 on Columbia Records. Produced by Springsteen, Jon Landau, and Steven Van Zandt, the twenty-track set marks a deliberate expansion from the concentrated intensity of Darkness on the Edge of Town, incorporating bar-band rock and roll, party songs, and country-influenced ballads alongside the working-class narratives Springsteen had established. The E Street Band — Roy Bittan on piano, Clarence Clemons on tenor saxophone, Danny Federici on organ, Garry Tallent on bass, Max Weinberg on drums, and Van Zandt on guitar — is central to the album's range. Clemons's saxophone anchors several tracks, from the rollicking "Sherry Darling" and "Cadillac Ranch" to the desperate late-night drive of "Drive All Night." Springsteen's harmonica playing is also prominent, particularly on the title track, a spare acoustic ballad about a young couple facing economic hardship. The album became Springsteen's first number-one record on the Billboard 200, driven by the single "Hungry Heart," his first Top 5 pop hit. The double-album format reflects Springsteen's desire to capture both the celebratory and despairing sides of American life — the jukebox exuberance of "Ramrod" and "Out in the Street" coexisting with the quiet devastation of "Independence Day" and "The River."
