"Wee-Dot" (Alternate Take) is a relentless bebop blues from A Night at Birdland Vol. 1 by the Art Blakey Quintet, recorded live in 1954. Composed by J.J. Johnson and Leo Parker, the 12-bar blues in B-flat is taken at approximately 270 bpm, providing extended solo space for three of the quintet's members. Lou Donaldson burns through ten choruses of alto saxophone, his Parker-derived vocabulary perfectly suited to the blazing tempo. Clifford Brown follows with an astonishing twelve choruses on trumpet, constructing a solo of remarkable narrative coherence despite its length and speed. Silver contributes eleven piano choruses of his own, and bassist Curly Russell steps into the spotlight for a rare two-chorus solo that demonstrates his rhythmic anchor role in the group. As an alternate take, this performance offers a fascinating comparison to the version on Vol. 2, revealing how the same musicians approached identical material with fresh ideas on different nights. The extended solo lengths give each player room to develop ideas at length, making this one of the most substantial and rewarding tracks in the Birdland series.
