A Night at Birdland Vol. 1 was recorded live at Birdland in New York City on February 21, 1954, and released on Blue Note Records in 1956. The quintet features Clifford Brown on trumpet, Lou Donaldson on alto saxophone, Horace Silver on piano, Curly Russell on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. The seven-track program includes Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," Charlie Parker's "Wee-Dot," Silver's "Split Kick," and several other pieces that showcase the group's hard bop energy. The concert, introduced by emcee Pee Wee Marquette, captures one of the great live jazz performances of the 1950s. Brown, just twenty-three years old, plays with the brilliance and lyrical warmth that made him the most admired young trumpeter in jazz — his solo on "A Night in Tunisia" is among his most celebrated recorded performances. Silver's piano comping and soloing already reflect the funky, blues-rooted approach he would develop further with the Jazz Messengers. Blakey drives the group with explosive energy. The session is a foundational document of hard bop, recorded less than two and a half years before Brown's death in a car accident, and it helped establish both Blakey and Silver as leaders of the emerging movement.
