This 2019 recording of "You Stepped Out of a Dream" from Stephen Riley's album I Remember You presents tenor saxophonist Riley's distinctive approach to Nacio Herb Brown's 1940 standard. Known for his deep connection to the Lester Young tradition, Riley brings a light, airy tone and behind-the-beat phrasing to the 32-bar ABAC form in C, played here with a Latin feel at approximately 155 BPM. Riley opens with two choruses of tenor saxophone improvisation that reflect his signature style: relaxed, melodically inventive, and rhythmically free, floating above the time rather than driving through it. Guitarist Vic Juris, one of the most versatile guitarists in jazz, follows with two choruses of electric guitar that bring a different textural dimension to the trio's sound. Bassist Jay Anderson rounds out the solo section with two choruses of acoustic bass improvisation. The guitar-tenor-bass instrumentation gives this recording a distinctly open, airy quality, with no piano to fill in the harmonic middle register. Riley's Lester Young-influenced approach is particularly well-suited to this pianoless context, where the absence of chordal accompaniment allows his melodic lines to breathe freely. The recording captures a mature artist in full command of a highly personal aesthetic.
