Composed by Nacio Herb Brown with lyrics by Gus Kahn and published in 1940, "You Stepped out of a Dream" was introduced in the 1941 MGM film "Ziegfeld Girl," where Tony Martin performed it as Lana Turner descended a grand staircase in one of the film's most memorable scenes. The tune became so associated with Turner that it was played when she entered nightclubs and restaurants. The composition opens with a striking chromatic move from C major to D-flat major, a flat-two substitution that gives the melody its distinctive dreamy quality and sets it apart harmonically from standard repertoire. This harmonic richness inspired numerous contrafacts, including Lee Konitz's "Dream Stepper," Jimmy Raney's "Motion" (1954), Fred Hersch's "Lee's Dream," and Chick Corea's "Chick's Tune," which draws from the C section. Notable jazz recordings include versions by Nat King Cole (1949), Stan Getz (1950), Barney Kessel (1955), Sonny Rollins with Horace Silver, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey on "Sonny Rollins, Vol. 2" (1957), Dexter Gordon (1962), Oscar Peterson (1970), Shirley Horn (1990), and Samara Joy (2024). The AllSolos database features performances by Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Stephen Riley, Julieta Eugenio, and Lee Konitz with Brad Mehldau and Charlie Haden from "Alone Together" (1997). Brown also composed standards including "Singin' in the Rain," "Good Morning," and "Make 'Em Laugh."
