About
Herbie Hancock's electric piano solo is the second solo on this recording, following Freddie Hubbard on trumpet. Spanning half a chorus of the 40-bar AAB form in F at a moderate 131 BPM with a swing feel, Hancock contributes a half-chorus solo on electric piano, his crystalline touch and harmonic inventiveness adding a modern dimension to the Broadway standard. Hancock uses the electric piano's distinctive tonal palette to craft an improvisation that balances chordal textures with single-note melodic lines. This 1971 recording of Leonard Bernstein's "Lonely Town" from the musical On the Town appears on Freddie Hubbard's Grammy-winning CTI album First Light.
Herbie Hancock was 30 to 31 years old at the time.
