Recorded on September 14 and 16, 1971 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, First Light is Freddie Hubbard's third album for CTI Records, produced by Creed Taylor with arrangements and orchestration by Don Sebesky. The personnel draws from CTI's roster of first-call musicians: George Benson on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Hubert Laws on flute, Richard Wyands on piano, and Airto Moreira on percussion, supplemented by harp, vibraphone, and a full string and horn section. The album bridges hard bop and jazz fusion, layering Hubbard's bright, powerful trumpet over funky rhythms and lush orchestral arrangements. The original title track, built on a syncopated groove with string and flute textures, became a concert staple for Hubbard and embodies the CTI aesthetic — polished production that expanded jazz's audience without abandoning improvisational substance. The program includes covers of Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," recorded while the original was still at number one on the pop chart, and Henry Mancini's film theme "Moment to Moment." The album reached number seventeen on the Billboard jazz chart and won a Grammy Award, solidifying Hubbard's commercial standing during the early 1970s fusion era.
