Clifford Brown leads with two choruses of trumpet on this alternate take of his own composition "Daahoud," navigating the demanding AABA form in E-flat at approximately 232 BPM. His improvisation follows a different developmental arc than the released version while displaying the same dazzling technique and melodic resourcefulness that characterized all his work. The slightly more relaxed tempo compared to the issued master gives Brown marginally more room to breathe within the tune's sophisticated harmonic framework, and he uses that space to craft an entirely new narrative over familiar terrain. Every surviving recording from these 1954 sessions preserves irreplaceable moments of invention from this tragically short-lived ensemble.
