About
Alan Ferber contributes two choruses of trombone on "Free Radicals" at approximately 227 BPM, the third and final horn soloist on this up-tempo Matt Zebley original. His improvisation over the 36-bar AABA form in F minor demonstrates the kind of fluid technique and harmonic awareness that set him apart as one of the more accomplished trombonists of his generation. Following alto and trumpet solos by Zebley and Ron Stout, Ferber's two-chorus statement brings the performance to its conclusion, his warm sound adding tonal depth to a track that has been dominated by the brighter timbres of saxophone and trumpet.
Alan Ferber was 22 to 23 years old at the time.
