About
Michael Brecker opens with one chorus of tenor saxophone on "My One And Only Love," a masterpiece of ballad interpretation from his self-titled 1987 Impulse! debut. At approximately 82 BPM over the 32-bar AABA form in C, his enormous sound is reduced to a whisper as he caresses the melody with subtle inflections and gorgeous tonal shadings. As the first of two soloists in this intimate duo-like setting with Pat Metheny, Brecker's chorus strips away the complexity and technical virtuosity heard elsewhere on the album, revealing a profoundly lyrical artist rooted in the tradition of great jazz balladry. This recording has become one of the most beloved performances in his extensive discography.
Michael Brecker was 37 to 38 years old at the time.
