About
Opening the solo section, this piano improvisation spans two choruses of the 36-bar AABA form at a medium-up swing tempo of 172 BPM. This reversed order allows Broadbent to establish the interpretive direction of the performance, and he does so with characteristic elegance, spinning long melodic lines through the tune's changes with harmonic inventiveness and rhythmic grace. The 36-bar form provides a defined harmonic landscape for the improvisation. Following this solo, Doug Webb takes over on tenor sax.
Alan Broadbent was 66 to 67 years old at the time.
