About
Zoot Sims's tenor saxophone solo is the second of seven solos on the title track of the 1956 Tenor Conclave album, following Hank Mobley. He takes three choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at 246 BPM over the "I Got Rhythm" changes, bringing his characteristically relaxed, swinging approach to the uptempo setting. At 30 to 31 years old, Sims was already one of the most admired tenors in jazz, and his smooth, effortless-sounding lines provide a stylistic contrast to Mobley's harder-bop approach. He is followed by Al Cohn and John Coltrane.
Zoot Sims was 30 to 31 years old at the time.
