Tenor Conclave brings together four tenor saxophonists — Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, John Coltrane, and Zoot Sims — for a blowing session recorded on September 7, 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, and released on Prestige Records in 1957. The rhythm section of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums provides the foundation for four extended performances. The program includes the standard "How Deep Is the Ocean?" and "Just You, Just Me" alongside two originals. Each saxophonist brings a distinct personality: Cohn and Sims represent the cool, Lester Young-influenced school of tenor playing, while Mobley's warm, melodic approach and Coltrane's increasingly intense, harmonically searching style pull from the opposite end of the spectrum. The album captures Coltrane during his breakout year — 1956 also saw him record Tenor Madness with Sonny Rollins and begin his tenure in the Miles Davis Quintet. The multi-tenor format was a popular device in 1950s hard bop, allowing listeners to hear contrasting styles in direct comparison. Produced by Bob Weinstock, the session follows Prestige's characteristic one-take, minimal-rehearsal approach, prioritizing spontaneous interaction over polished arrangements.
