About
Al Cohn's tenor saxophone solo is the third of seven solos on the title track of the 1956 Tenor Conclave album, following Hank Mobley and Zoot Sims. He takes three choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at 246 BPM over the "I Got Rhythm" changes, his warm, Lester Young-influenced tone and relaxed phrasing reflecting his West Coast jazz sensibility. At 30 to 31 years old, Cohn's approach provides another stylistic perspective in this four-way tenor comparison, preceding John Coltrane's more harmonically adventurous statement.
Al Cohn was 30 to 31 years old at the time.
