About
Red Garland's piano solo is the fifth of seven solos on the title track of the 1956 Tenor Conclave album, following the four tenor saxophone statements. He takes two choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at 256 BPM over the "I Got Rhythm" changes, providing a welcome timbral contrast after the succession of tenor solos. At 32 to 33 years old, Garland's characteristic block-chord style and swinging single-line runs bring a different energy to the performance, his playing serving as a bridge between the horn solos and the rhythm section features that follow from Paul Chambers and Art Taylor.
Red Garland was 32 to 33 years old at the time.
