About
Paul Chambers's acoustic bass solo is the sixth of seven solos on the title track of the 1956 Tenor Conclave album, following the four tenors and Red Garland's piano. He takes two choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at 256 BPM over the "I Got Rhythm" changes, demonstrating the remarkable technical facility that made him one of the most sought-after bassists of the era. At just 20 to 21 years old, Chambers navigates the fast tempo with clarity and melodic invention, his articulation cutting through even at this demanding speed. He is followed by Art Taylor's drum solo.
Paul Chambers was 20 to 21 years old at the time.
