About
John Coltrane's tenor saxophone solo is the third of five solos on "Just You, Just Me" from the 1956 Tenor Conclave album, following Hank Mobley and Zoot Sims. He takes two choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at 234 BPM in E-flat, and his playing already shows a more harmonically searching quality than his fellow tenors. At 29 to 30 years old, Coltrane's lines pack more notes and harmonic information per bar, foreshadowing the dense, exploratory approach that would soon make him the dominant voice in jazz. He is followed by Al Cohn and Red Garland.
John Coltrane was 29 to 30 years old at the time.
