About
Al Cohn's tenor saxophone solo is the second of six solos on Hank Mobley's "Bob's Boys" from the 1956 Tenor Conclave album, following John Coltrane. He takes four choruses of the 12-bar blues form at 197 BPM in F, bringing his warm, melodically oriented approach to the blues. Cohn's playing offers a stylistic counterpoint to Coltrane's more harmonically dense opening statement, with smoother phrasing and a lighter touch that reflects his West Coast influences. He is followed by Hank Mobley and Zoot Sims.
Al Cohn was 30 to 31 years old at the time.
