About
Red Garland's piano solo is the fifth of six solos on Hank Mobley's "Bob's Boys" from the 1956 Tenor Conclave album, following the four tenor saxophone statements. He takes two choruses of the 12-bar blues form at 203 BPM in F, providing a timbral shift after the succession of saxophone solos. Garland's blues playing draws on his characteristic blend of block chords and swinging single lines, his rhythmic assurance and harmonic taste bringing a fresh perspective to the form after four distinct tenor interpretations. He is followed by Paul Chambers on acoustic bass.
Red Garland was 32 to 33 years old at the time.
