About
Stan Getz's tenor saxophone solo on "Stella by Starlight" is the only solo on this 1952 recording from Stan Getz Plays. He takes approximately one and three-quarter choruses of the 32-bar ABCA' form at 158 BPM with a swing feel in G, his warm, luminous tone and fluid phrasing bringing out the romantic beauty of Victor Young's classic standard. At 24 to 25 years old, Getz was already one of the most celebrated tenor saxophonists in jazz, and this performance exemplifies the lyrical approach and effortless technique that defined the cool jazz aesthetic he helped establish.
Stan Getz was 24 to 25 years old at the time.
