About
Taking the 2nd solo, this voice improvisation spans two choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at an uptempo 215 BPM. The underlying chord progression is drawn from "I Got Rhythm," making this a contrafact -- a new melody composed over borrowed changes. The rhythm changes format has been a proving ground for jazz improvisers since the bebop era, and Gyorgy's decision to build an original melody over this harmonic framework connects her writing to that tradition while giving the piece its own identity. Situated between Allison Au's alto sax solo and Felix Fox-Pappas's turn on piano, it occupies a pivotal spot in the arrangement.
Caity Gyorgy was 22 to 23 years old at the time.
