"A Moment" is an original composition by Canadian jazz vocalist and songwriter Caity Gyorgy, featured on her album Featuring, released in 2022 on La Reserve Records. The tune is a contrafact based on George and Ira Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm," meaning Gyorgy composed a new melody and lyrics over that song's well-known chord changes. This places "A Moment" in a long tradition of jazz contrafacts built on rhythm changes, joining classics like Charlie Parker's "Anthropology" and Sonny Rollins's "Oleo," though Gyorgy's version retains the accessible, vocal-centered character of her songwriting rather than adopting a purely instrumental bebop approach. The familiar harmonic foundation gives the piece a natural swing and provides fertile ground for improvisation, which the recording on Featuring exploits through solos by alto saxophonist Allison Au, Gyorgy herself on voice, pianist Felix Fox-Pappas, and drummer Jacob Wutzke. By writing lyrics and a fresh melodic line over rhythm changes, Gyorgy demonstrates her command of jazz tradition and her skill at making well-traveled harmonic territory feel new. The album Featuring was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and designed as a showcase for collaborations with guest artists personally selected by Gyorgy for each track, and "A Moment" stands out for its energetic ensemble interplay and the breadth of solo contributions it accommodates.
