About
Closing out the solo section, this acoustic bass improvisation spans five choruses of the 12-bar blues at an uptempo 207 BPM. Written by trumpeter and composer John Carisi, "Israel" is a minor-key blues that first gained prominence through its inclusion on Miles Davis's landmark Birth of the Cool sessions in 1949. Brown's acoustic bass solo showcases the instrument's melodic potential, moving beyond the walking-bass role into lyrical improvisation. Coming after Stephen Riley's tenor sax solo, this is the final improvisation before the ensemble returns to the head.
John Brown was 36 to 37 years old at the time.
