Arcoiris Sandoval's piano solo is the first of two solos on "Spiral into Oblivion," an original composition from her 2018 album First Voyage. Sandoval takes the opening solo at a blazing 294 BPM in C with a swing feel, one of the fastest tempos on the entire album. The title's evocative imagery of spiraling descent is matched by the relentless intensity of the performance. At nearly 300 BPM, the solo pushes the boundaries of tempo in a trio setting, demanding extraordinary technical facility and split-second musical decision-making. Drummer Allan Mednard follows with his own solo.
