"Spiral into Oblivion" is an original jazz composition by pianist and composer Arcoiris Sandoval, recorded on her Sonic Asylum Trio's debut album First Voyage, released on MEII Enterprises in 2018. The trio recording features Sandoval on piano with Marty Kenney on bass and Allan Mednard on drums, and the track serves as a vehicle for both piano and drum improvisation. The composition is part of a suite of original works on First Voyage that reflect Sandoval's adventurous creative vision, sitting alongside pieces such as "Sonic Asylum," "Fox Hunt," and "Journey to Agartha." Sandoval, originally from Tucson, Arizona and based in New York City, launched her Sonic Asylum project in 2016 as a platform for her original music and arrangements, blending modern jazz writing with thematic interests drawn from science fiction and other imaginative realms. A two-time recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award, Sandoval has brought her original repertoire to prominent stages including Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Tucson Jazz Festival, and Winter Jazzfest, supported by grants from organizations such as Chamber Music America and South Arts. First Voyage won a Global Music Award, establishing the Sonic Asylum Trio as a noteworthy voice in contemporary jazz. "Spiral into Oblivion" remains primarily associated with Sandoval's own performances and has not yet entered wider circulation among other artists.
