About
Willie Ruff's acoustic bass solo is the sole improvisation on this track and an unexpected highlight of the post-Morrison Doors' output. Ruff, a classically trained French horn player and bassist known for his work in the Mitchell-Ruff Duo, brings a jazz sensibility that stands in marked contrast to The Doors' rock foundations. Entering at approximately 1:53, his solo in A major at 153 BPM in 3/4 time spans over a minute, his warm tone and sophisticated melodic approach lending the track a distinctly different character from the band's typical sound. His guest appearance reflects the expanded musical palette the surviving trio pursued on Other Voices.
Willie Ruff was 39 to 40 years old at the time.
