About
Joe Henderson's tenor saxophone solo is the first of three improvisations on this harmonically adventurous arrangement of Cole Porter's classic standard. Taking two choruses of the 48-bar ABABCB form in D at 226 BPM, Henderson navigates the extended form with the melodic invention and harmonic daring that characterize his approach. The 48-bar structure provides substantially more harmonic territory than a standard 32-bar form, and Henderson's two choruses explore this landscape with the searching, angular quality that defined his playing on this album.
Joe Henderson was 26 to 27 years old at the time.
