About
Freddie Hubbard's trumpet solo is the first of three improvisations on this high-energy contrafact built on the chord changes of George Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm." Taking two choruses of the 32-bar AABA form in C at a brisk 250 BPM, Hubbard displays exceptional facility and rhythmic command, his trumpet lines navigating the familiar changes with the fire and precision that were making him one of the most exciting young voices in jazz. The demanding tempo brings out the best in his technique, his ideas flowing with an exhilarating sense of forward momentum.
Freddie Hubbard was 22 to 23 years old at the time.
