The Blues and the Abstract Truth was recorded on February 23, 1961 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio and released on Impulse! Records. Saxophonist and composer Oliver Nelson assembled an all-star sextet: Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone and flute, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. The six-track program consists entirely of Nelson originals, each exploring different aspects of the blues through increasingly abstract harmonic and melodic frameworks — hence the album's title. "Stolen Moments" became the session's most famous track and one of the most widely performed jazz compositions of the 1960s, with its descending minor-key melody and elegant arrangement for the three-horn front line. Dolphy's alto and flute add a distinctive edge alongside Nelson's own playing on both alto and tenor saxophone. Evans's piano comping, typically associated with more introspective settings, brings a subtle harmonic richness to the arrangements. The album was Nelson's breakthrough as a composer-arranger and demonstrated his ability to write for small groups with the same sophistication he brought to his later large-ensemble work for film and television. It remains one of the essential recordings of the early 1960s post-bop era.
