About
Oliver Nelson's alto saxophone solo is the second of four improvisations on this recording, following Dolphy's opening statement. Taking four choruses of the 12-bar blues in F at 134 BPM, Nelson switches from his usual tenor to the alto, his playing on this horn carrying a different tonal weight while maintaining the structural logic that characterized all his improvising. The four-chorus statement allows him to develop ideas at length over the blues form, his arranger's ear shaping a solo of considerable coherence.
Oliver Nelson was 28 to 29 years old at the time.
