About
Wayne Shorter's tenor saxophone solo is the second of three improvisations on this recording, following Tyner's piano. Taking seven choruses of the 24-bar form in B at 174 BPM in 3/4 time, Shorter delivers a commanding statement on his own composition. His seven-chorus solo demonstrates the compressed, elliptical approach to improvisation that set him apart from other saxophonists of his generation, each phrase loaded with harmonic implication and emotional resonance. The waltz meter adds an additional dimension to his characteristically searching melodic explorations.
Wayne Shorter was 30 to 31 years old at the time.
