About
McCoy Tyner's piano solo is the second of two improvisations on this recording, following Shorter's tenor saxophone. Taking two choruses of the 58-bar AABA form in C at 259 BPM, Tyner matches the demanding tempo and extended form with his characteristic power and harmonic invention. His quartal voicings and surging rhythmic momentum fill the 58-bar structure with driving energy, the sheer scale of each chorus allowing his solo to build through extended passages of increasing intensity.
McCoy Tyner was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
