About
Wayne Shorter's tenor saxophone solo is the second of three improvisations on this alternate take, following Tyner's piano. Taking seven choruses of the 24-bar form in B at 179 BPM in 3/4 time, Shorter delivers an entirely fresh seven-chorus statement that demonstrates the depth of his improvisational resources. Recorded during the same August 3, 1964 session as the master take, this alternate solo offers a parallel exploration of the waltz composition that illuminates different aspects of Shorter's relationship with the material.
Wayne Shorter was 30 to 31 years old at the time.
