About
Wayne Shorter's tenor saxophone solo is the first of two improvisations on this alternate take of the ballad from his 1964 JuJu sessions. Taking two choruses of the 24-bar ABA form in C at 68 BPM, Shorter charts an entirely fresh course through the composition's harmonic landscape, the alternate take offering a different but equally lyrical exploration of the ballad's contemplative mood. The slow tempo allows his characteristically searching phrasing to unfold with patience and deliberation.
Wayne Shorter was 30 to 31 years old at the time.
