About
James Moody's tenor saxophone solo is the second of three improvisations on this recording, following Gordon's nine-chorus opening statement. Taking eight choruses of the 16-bar form in C at 170 BPM, Moody matches Gordon's extended statement with equally impressive invention. His lighter, more agile approach provides a revealing contrast to Gordon's bigger, more spacious sound, the two-tenor format creating a dialogue between complementary approaches to the instrument.
James Moody was 43 to 44 years old at the time.
