About
Lucky Thompson's tenor saxophone solo is the third of four improvisations on this recording, following the Parker-Davis split chorus. Lucky plays the first half of a chorus, taking a half chorus of the 32-bar AABA form in D at 180 BPM. His warm tenor saxophone brings a different color to Gillespie's composition, his half-chorus statement continuing the relay-style solo format that characterizes this performance.
Lucky Thompson was 21 to 22 years old at the time.
