About
Opening the solo section, this tenor sax improvisation spans three choruses of the 16-bar form at a medium swing tempo of 135 BPM. The two-tenor format has a rich history in jazz, from the battles of Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray to the collaborations of Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, and Smith and Redman honor that tradition while bringing thoroughly contemporary sensibilities to the exchange. Following this solo, Walter Smith III takes over on tenor sax.
Joshua Redman was 48 to 49 years old at the time.
