About
Sonny Rollins's tenor sax solo is the second solo on this recording, following Jim Hall on electric guitar. Spanning two and a half choruses of the 32-bar ABC form in C at a brisk 154 BPM with a swing feel, Rollins follows with two and a half choruses of his own, his larger, more aggressive tenor sound providing a dramatic contrast to Hall's intimate guitar. Sonny Rollins begins his solo acappella in the middle of the form leading up to a fermata. It almost sounds like two recorded takes were spliced together. Then the band comes back in and joins him for the last 8 bars of the form in tempo.
Sonny Rollins was 31 to 32 years old at the time.
