Ben Paterson is a jazz pianist, organist, composer, and occasional vocalist based in New York City. He launched his career in Chicago, joining NEA Jazz Master Von Freeman’s band in his early twenties and performing with him for the next seven years until Freeman’s passing in 2012. Paterson has since collaborated with renowned jazz artists including Catherine Russell, Bobby Broom, Houston Person, and Samara Joy, appearing on her Grammy winning album. He has released seven albums as a bandleader and performed internationally, opening for legends such as Steely Dan and B.B. King. Known for his joyful swing, impeccable touch, and soulful honesty, Paterson continues to perform at premier venues and festivals around the world.

Ben Paterson was the First Place winner of the inaugural Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition in 2018. Ben Paterson was designated a Steinway Artist in 2019. Ben Paterson has a video courses available on his website and Patreon page.

Early Life

Ben Paterson, born in 1982, was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began studying classical piano at the age of six and discovered a passion for jazz in his early teens. Throughout high school, he honed his skills at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. In 2004, Paterson moved to Chicago to study political science at the University of Chicago, but after a year, he left to join the band of NEA Jazz Master Von Freeman. He performed regularly with Freeman until the saxophonist’s passing in August 2012.
